A Due Date on a Closed Day Moves Forward
Where a filing date falls on a Saturday, a Sunday or a statutory holiday, it is met on the next business day. The calculator shows every day skipped and names what closed it, which matters most around Christmas and Boxing Day, where two holidays and a weekend can sit together.
The Nine Days Treated as Holidays Here
| Holiday | When it falls |
|---|---|
| New Year’s Day | January 1 |
| Family Day | Third Monday in February |
| Good Friday | Two days before Easter Sunday |
| Victoria Day | Monday on or before May 24 |
| Canada Day | July 1 |
| Labour Day | First Monday in September |
| Thanksgiving | Second Monday in October |
| Christmas Day | December 25 |
| Boxing Day | December 26 |
These are the Ontario statutory holidays the deadline calculator already applies, so both tools agree about any date you put into them.
Where This Date Comes From
A T2 is due within six months of the fiscal year-end, and that is the date to put in here. The nil T2 deadline calculator works it out from a year-end and applies the shift itself, and the unfiled years checker lists it for every outstanding year at once.
A nil T2 is $300.00 plus HST per tax year.
Worked Examples, Taken From the Calculator Itself
These rows are produced by the same holiday engine the calculator above runs on, so the table and the tool cannot disagree. Each one starts from a fiscal year-end, adds the six months, and then shows what the shift does to it.
| Fiscal year-end | Six months later | Falls on | Days skipped | Filing due |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January 1, 2026 | July 1, 2026 | Wednesday | Canada Day | July 2, 2026 |
| January 4, 2026 | July 4, 2026 | Saturday | Saturday, Sunday | July 6, 2026 |
| January 5, 2026 | July 5, 2026 | Sunday | Sunday | July 6, 2026 |
| April 11, 2026 | October 11, 2026 | Sunday | Sunday, Thanksgiving | October 13, 2026 |
| July 1, 2026 | January 1, 2027 | Friday | New Year’s Day, Saturday, Sunday | January 4, 2027 |
| September 26, 2026 | March 26, 2027 | Friday | Good Friday, Saturday, Sunday | March 29, 2027 |
| June 23, 2028 | December 23, 2028 | Saturday | Saturday, Sunday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day | December 27, 2028 |
| June 30, 2028 | December 31, 2028 | Sunday | Sunday, New Year’s Day | January 2, 2029 |
The last row is the one worth looking at twice. A June 30, 2028 year-end is due on December 31, 2028, which is a Sunday, and the next day is New Year’s Day — so a year-end in one calendar year has a filing date in a different one. The Christmas row is the longest shift the engine produces: a Saturday followed by a Sunday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, four closed days in a row.
The shift moves the filing date only. It does not add time to the six months, and it does not change the year being filed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Shift Ever Move a Date Backwards?
No. A date on a closed day is met on the next business day, never an earlier one.
What Happens When Christmas Falls on a Friday?
December 25 closes the Friday, December 26 and the weekend follow, and the date lands on the Monday. Put the date in and the tool lists each day it skipped.
Are These Federal or Provincial Holidays?
They are the Ontario statutory holidays, which is what this firm files against. A corporation elsewhere may see a different local list, and the date the Canada Revenue Agency accepts is the one that matters.
Does the Shift Change How Many Days Late a Return Is?
It changes the date the return was due, so it changes the count from it. For a non-resident-owned corporation that count carries a charge, which the non-resident T2 penalty calculator works out.
Does Filing Early Ever Hurt?
No. The shift only matters at the end of the window. A nil return can be transmitted as soon as the tax year has ended.
